Sorge nell'antico monastero femminile delle Benedettine che fu edificato intorno all'anno mille con il nome di Santa Maria Maddalena. L'anno della sua fondazione è incerto ma secondo alcuni documenti papali firmati da Nicolò V nel 1453 questo precedentemente era chiamato Santa Maria de domino Sicone in quanto edificato da questo principe, di origini longobarde.
Egli tenne il governo del Principato di Salerno dall'817 all'856 e quindi l'edificazione del monastero è ipotizzabile in questo periodo.
Il monastero fu soppresso nel 1811 ed i locali furono dapprima sede delle Legioni scelte poi sede del Liceo ginnasio Torquato Tasso e dell'annesso Convitto.

It rises in the ancient female Benedictine monastery which was built around the year one thousand with the name of Santa Maria Maddalena. The year of its foundation is uncertain but according to some papal documents signed by Nicolò V in 1453 this was previously called Santa Maria de domino Sicone as it was built by this prince, of Lombard origins.
He held the government of the Principality of Salerno from 817 to 856 and therefore the construction of the monastery is conceivable in this period.
The monastery was suppressed in 1811 and the premises were at first the seat of the chosen Legions and then the seat of the Torquato Tasso high school and the adjoining boarding school.
