★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Il convento Convento di San Nicola della Palma a Salerno fu eretto dall’abate Leone di Cava e dal castaldo Vivo intorno al 1060. I due ottennero da Gisulfo II dei terreni ed un’abitazione nei pressi dell’antica Porta della Palma.
Nel 1639 i frati vi edificano una grande infermeria, per i vecchi religiosi inabili della Provincia, collegata al vicino convento di San Lorenzo. Il convento nel 1653 è citato nel manoscritto Pinto “Salerno assediata dai francesi” che rievoca l’assalto per mare del 1648.
Nel 1818 divenne sede dell’Orfanotrofio che prese il nome di “Reale Ospizio di San Ferdinando”. Nella chiesa del convento vengono celebrati i funerali di Ferdinando I delle Due Sicilie. Con la nascita del Regno d’Italia venne confermata la sua funzione di Orfanotrofio maschile, intitolato in seguito ad Umberto I.
 The convent Convent of San Nicola della Palma in Salerno was built by Abbot Leone di Cava and the steward Vivo around 1060. The two obtained land from Gisulfo II and a house near the ancient Porta della Palma.
In 1639 the friars built a large infirmary there, for the old incapacitated religious of the Province, connected to the nearby convent of San Lorenzo. The convent in 1653 is mentioned in the Pinto manuscript "Salerno besieged by the French" which recalls the assault by sea of 1648.
In 1818 it became the seat of the Orphanage which took the name of "Royal Hospice of San Ferdinando". The funeral of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies is celebrated in the church of the convent. With the birth of the Kingdom of Italy, its function as a male orphanage was confirmed, later named after Umberto I.
