Fu denominata Castrogiovanni fino al 1927, anno in cui riprese l'antico nome di Enna. È nota per essere il capoluogo di provincia più alto d'Italia, per via dell'altitudine del centro abitato che si attesta a 931 m presso il Municipio, raggiunge i 992 m al Castello di Lombardia. La città è stata definita Urbs Inexpugnabilis dai romani per la sua imprendibilità, Ombelico di Siciliaper la sua centralità geografica rispetto all'Isola, e Belvedere di Sicilia per le vedute panoramiche che da qui si hanno nelle varie direzioni.
Nei tre millenni precedenti è stata roccaforte quasi inespugnabile di sicani, greci, romani, bizantini, arabi,
normanni, svevi e aragonesi. I suoi principali monumenti storici il castello, la Rocca di Cerere ed il duomo. È sede dell'Università Kore.
Enna (Castruggiuvanni in Sicilian) is an Italian town of 26 755 inhabitants, the capital of the free municipal consortium of the same name in Sicily.
It was called Castrogiovanni until 1927, the year in which it resumed the ancient name of Enna. It is known for being the highest provincial capital in Italy, due to the altitude of the inhabited center which stands at 931 m at the Town Hall, reaches 992 m at the Castello di Lombardia. The city has been called Urbs Inexpugnabilis by the Romans for its impregnability, Navel of Sicily for its geographical centrality with respect to the Island, and Belvedere of Sicily for the panoramic views that can be had from here in the various directions.
In the previous three millennia it was an almost impregnable stronghold of Sicans, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs,
Normans, Swabians and Aragonese. Its main historical monuments are the castle, the Rocca di Cerere and the cathedral. It is home to the Kore University.
