Già in epoca romana il comune esisteva ed era attraversato dalla Mediolanum-Ticinum, una strada romana che congiungeva Milano (Mediolanum) e Pavia (Ticinum). La terra nel tempo cambiò più volte proprietario, e nel 1929 insieme ad altri due comuni limitrofi decisero di formare un nuovo comune chiamato Certosa di Pavia. Nel 1958 il comune di Borgarello riacquisì la sua autonomia.

The municipality of Borgarello, in the province of Pavia, has 2678 inhabitants (Istat 2019).
