Di origine Longobarda, conserva tutt'ora , nell'abitato molto sparso , una bella torre molto antica, la Chiesa di S. Bartolomeo e vari palazzi gentilizi. Il territoriocomunale ha una superficie di 82,20 kmq.e una popolazione alla data di oggi di circa 5.000 abitanti, tutti accentrati nel capoluogo. Per 3/5 la superficie è occupata da seminativi, per 1/5 da colture arboreee per 1/5 da pascoli e boschi; i prodotti agricoli principali sono grano, mais, olio d'oliva e vino.Nel torrente "la Catola" si trova una sorgente di acqua solforosa di cui si fa un discreto uso terapeutico per bagni. S. Bartolomeo in Galdo ha un servizio aitomobilistico giornaliero che lo collega a Napoli e Campobasso. Il paese domina la vallata del Fortore, fiume che nasce dal monte altieri 888 metri s.l.m.Il bosco Montauro , alle pendici del monte taglianaso, a nord est del centro abitato , è un bosco prevalentemente di querce e faggio. Le specie faunistiche sono: il cinghiale, la volpe, il ghiro, il lupo appenninico. Tra i volatili si segnalano il nibbio, il picchio verde, il picchio rosso e lla beccaccia. Il clima è temperato con estate calda e secca ; inverni rigidi e linghi con nevicate abbondanti e ricorrenti gelate. L'attuale territorio fu abitato dai Sanniti e in segiito dai Liguri Bebiani o Cornelianiche i Tomani obbligarono a trasferirsi nel Sannio.
