According to the historian Annibale Brosio, the current municipal building together with the civic tower which also corresponded to the entrance to Porta Mairano was one of the three ancient entrances inside the fortified city of Montechiaro.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Accanto al Municipio si erge la Torre Civica medioevale che rappresentava una delle porte accesso al borgo fortificato. La Torre risale al XIII secolo ed è detta “il portone”. L'edificio del Municipio non ha particolare pregio.
Next to the Town Hall stands the Medieval Civic Tower which represented one of the gates accessing the fortified village. The Tower dates back to the 13th century and is called "the gate". The Town Hall building has no particular value.
