Le origini del paese sono sicuramente romane (secolo I a. C.). Il nome deriva, infatti, dal latino "civitas" che attesterebbe l'esistenza di un discreto centro abitato. ll centro storico conserva tracce dell'impianto "a scacchiera" tipico degli insediamenti romani. Inoltre il borgo, posto su un terrazzo naturale dominante la valle dell'Oglio, era attraversato dalla via militare romana che univa direttamente Milano e Brescia e Aquileia.

The town's origins are definitely Roman (Century I a. C.). The name derives in fact from the Latin "civitas" which would indicate the existence of a discrete village. The old town retains traces of the plant "checkerboard" pattern typical of Roman settlements. In addition, the village, situated on a natural terrace dominating the Oglio Valley, was crossed by the Roman military road that connected directly to Milan and Brescia and Aquileia.
