Premetto subito che non sono per nulla un nostalgico del deprecato ventennio fascista. Tuttavia, mi sono sentito davvero a disagio: in un altro paese, meno ossessionato da retoriche di dubbio equilibrio storico e da sensi di colpa non sufficientemente elaborati, il memoriale dei trasvolatori atlantici avrebbe ben altro risalto. Non sarebbe relegato all'anonimato da un senso di vergogna nazionale vagamente ipocrita, evidentemente timorata dal nome di Italo Balbo, ma verrebbe inquadrato in una luce di oggettività: in altre parole, se è vero che l'esecrabile retorica del regime dell'epoca emana tuttora un fetore insopportabile, è altrettanto vero che le imprese degli aviatori sepolti a Orbetello sono paragonabili, mutatis mutandis, ad altre grandi imprese ancora oggi celebratissime (forse anche all'allunaggio ricordato in questi giorni nel cinquantesimo anniversario). Invece qui, niente: non una segnalazione, non un cartello, non una guida storica... niente... Che strano paese, l'Italia... The five stars are not for the site as it is, but for how it could be if history were to teach us. Let me start by saying that I am not at all nostalgic for the deprecated fascist decade. However, I felt really uncomfortable: in another country, less obsessed with old rhetoric of doubt and guilt balance not sufficiently processed, the Memorial of Trasvolatori Atlantic would have much more prominence. It would not be relegated to the anonymity of a sense of national shame vaguely hypocritical, apparently fearing the name of Italo Balbo, but would be framed in the light of objectivity, in other words, if it is true that the hateful rhetoric of the era regime emanates still an unbearable stench, it is equally true that the exploits of the aviators buried in Orbetello are comparable, mutatis mutandis, to other large companies that are still celebrated today (perhaps also due to the landing recorded in these days on the fiftieth anniversary). Instead here, nothing: not a signal, not a sign, not a historical guide ... nothing ... What a strange country, Italy ...
