The Monumental Cemetery of Como was built in the 30s of the nineteenth century, in the Neoclassical style. Until the Second World War it has collected monuments, tombs, chapels of inestimable value. However, apart from rare moments of solicitude by private individuals, it is abandoned to a slow decay, to dispossession due to theft and vandalism, to deterioration due to the neglect of the administrations that have followed one another since the 1950s. There are works by the major sculptors working in Lombardy over an entire century: famous names such as Vincenzo Vela, Ernesto Bazzaro, Giannino Castiglioni, Arturo Caravatti, Achille Alberti, Ezechiele Trombetta, Ampelio Regazzoni, Pietro Clerici, etc. and above all, incomprehensibly forgotten, Luigi Agliati (1816-1863) from Como, prolific author of a sculpture that abandoned Neoclassicism and returned to the purity of the early Renaissance. The Monumental Cemetery is a poorly guarded museum, an ignored historical-artistic wealth. Since the Second World War it has also collected works by relatively recent artists: the only one that should be mentioned is Francesco Somaini who, while adhering to the Informal, has been respectful of tradition and the place of worship that now preserves some of his works. For the rest, only small examples of the disorientation of the Modern Movement, of the avant-gardes and so on, in the face of the Memory of the dead. Built in the early 1800s, after the Napoleonic edicts, for health reasons on the historical road, which collects the remains of famous and non-Comensi citizens and associations, in family or single tombs, decorated with works of art by famous artists and architects, such as arch.G.Terragni, C.Cattaneo, P.Clerici, E.Riva, G.Collina, F.Somaini, E. and G.
