This church is imposing and of a yellow color that also dominates to see it from above such as the castle area, the two side bell towers make it almost unique, it has a beautiful square in front, behind it is the cemetery.

Rimaneggiata nei secoli come capita a tante chiese, sorge nel XIII secolo dove c’era già una piccola cappella, della quale parlano alcuni documenti nel 1316. Riedificata in stile gotico nel 1515 dal maestro Valentin Winkler, ma non viene mai terminata. Nel 1610 la chiesa divenne la chiesa parrocchiale Pfarrei Maria Himmelfahrt. Altri rimaneggiamenti furono nel 1789 a opera dal costruttore brunicense Jakob Philipp Santer e tra il 1851 e il 1852 dall’architetto viennese Hermann von Bergmann. Notevole dipinti all’interno sono opere dei pitori tirolesi Georg Mader e Franz Hellweger. Di pregevole fattura anche il bassorilievo di bronzo, la deposizione, del 1620. Maria Assunta in Brunico si intravvede da lontano perché i suoi due campanili svettano sopra le abitazioni, ma percorrendo le vie del centro storico si fatica a trovarla. Solo quando si raggiunge la Via Ragen di Sopra si comincia a vedere una parte del fronte, poi al raggiungere la piccola piazza antistante, si rimane a bocca aperta, stupiti dalla imponenza della facciata. Quando si entra dal portone principale, si viene colpiti dalla luminosità della navata unica, dai colori tenui dal verde degli stucchi, dal marrone terra delle formelle poste sulle pareti laterali attorno agli altari laterali, dal grigio chiaro delle colonnette e dallo sfavillante oro delle cornici e dei vari fregi che circondano gli affreschi sulle volte. In fondo alla navata centrale risalta l’altare con una pala raffigurante l’Assunzione di Maria al Cielo, circondata da cornice e fregi dorati. Sopra il portichetto di ingresso si trova il maestoso organo. L’insieme è tenuto con estrema cura e vi si respira e vive un’aria di spiritualità. The Church of S. Maria Assunta in Brunico can be glimpsed from afar because its two bell towers rise above the houses, but walking through the streets of the historic center it is difficult to find it. Only when you reach Via Ragen di Sopra you begin to see a part of the front, then when you reach the small square in front, you are left speechless, amazed by the grandeur of the facade. When you enter the main door, you are struck by the brightness of the single nave, by the soft colors of the green of the stuccoes, by the earth brown of the tiles placed on the side walls around the side altars, by the light gray of the columns and by the sparkling gold of the of the various friezes that surround the frescoes on the vaults. At the end of the central nave the altar stands out with an altarpiece depicting the Assumption of Mary into Heaven, surrounded by a frame and gilded friezes. Above the entrance porch is the majestic organ. The whole is kept with extreme care and you can breathe and live an air of spirituality.

It has a single nave, inside it is bright thanks to the natural light that enters from the church windows, at the end of the nave there's the altar of the Assumption of Mary, interesting frescos on the ceiling, the organ above the entrance, the confessional. If you happens to visit Bruneck, be sure to visit this church.
