L'edificio era originariamente intitolato a san Pietro Apostolo come attesta il documento redatto a seguito della visita pastorale di mons. Luigi Pappacoda, avvenuta il 4 maggio 1640. Solo più tardi, a partire dal 1792, viene indicata come titolare della chiesa la Madonna Assunta, protettrice di Trepuzzi. La costruzione in carparo e in pietra fu eretta nel 1603, come indica l'iscrizione posta sulla facciata, sotto lo stemma civico e presenta una facciata molto semplice. L'interno, a croce latina con una sola navata, presenta quattro campate con volte decorate. Il pavimento, originariamente in pietra, è stato sostituito completamente con lastre di marmo a scacchiera nel 1912, come indica una scritta posta per terra, al centro della chiesa. Il campanile fu costruito in sostituzione di un altro più antico che sorgeva in corrispondenza del coro e della vecchia sagrestia. Ultimamente la chiesa ha subito un incendio causando molti danni all'interno, ora completamente ristrutturata e molto bella da visitare. The Parish Maria S.S. Assunta, located in Corso Umberto I, is the mother church of Trepuzzi. The building was originally dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle as the document drawn up following the pastoral visit of Msgr. The interior, in the form of a Latin cross with a single nave, has four spans with decorated vaults. The floor, originally in stone, was completely replaced with checkerboard marble slabs in 1912, as indicated by an inscription placed on the ground in the center of the church. The bell tower was built to replace an older one that stood in correspondence with the choir and the old sacristy. Lately the church has suffered a fire causing a lot of damage inside, now completely renovated and very nice to visit.

Per arrivare all'ingresso della chiesa bisogna fare il Corso Umberto 1. Molto bella artisticamente con delle navate adornate e con delle pitture di notevole pregio, per non parlare poi dell'altare principale, e del campanile di cui allego le foto.
