Medieval church, later Baroque, which preserves interesting altarpieces, including one dedicated to Blessed Agostino Casotti and one dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario, to whose side there are two remarkable marble statues depicting angels.

The church of S. Domenico was built in 1700 it belonged to the followers of S. Domenico called Domenicani. Church in Baroque style and the altarpieces are still in good condition. They are rectangular tables with figures of the Madonna and Child flanked by other saints, painted by hand. Currently there are two altarpieces, one of which dedicated to Blessed Agostino Casotti and the other to the Madonna del Roario on the sides there are two marble statues depicting angels. An imposing, majestic church, beautiful internally with marble altars with the blades on the right side depicting the Virgin SS Maria del Rosario, Santa Rosa da Lima and S. Tommaso d'Aquino, while on the left side of the church there is the altarpiece of the nativity, the canvas of S. Pietro, that of S. Vincenzo Ferreri and that of the Blessed Angelo Casotti. Behind the high altar there is the carved wooden choir of 26 small statues representing Saints of the Dominican order. It is an artistic church that you absolutely must see to appreciate it.

The church from the outside looks very good, well maintained and well restored. Easily accessible within the perimeter of old Lucera. I add some historical information. The church of San Domenico commissioned by the Angevins in the first half of the fourteenth century is one of the major religious buildings in the city. Built at the behest of Charles II of Anjou, the Church of San Domenico was built with material obtained from Arab warehouses abandoned by the Saracens, expelled from Lucera in the fourteenth century and since the fifteenth century it has been an important center of theological and artistic research. Originally in the Gothic-Angevin style, the church was markedly modified in the eighteenth century and converted into a sumptuous Baroque, as evidenced by the addition of eight marble chapels, the rich decorative elements, but above all the original checkerboard facade, where it is set the portal with the Dominican coat of arms. The interior with a single nave is enriched with numerous side niches, which house the precious altars. The left side wall is marked by elegant single lancet windows, where the Angevin coat of arms masters. On the right side a chapel with a domed roof was built in the sixteenth century, with access to the oratory dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary. The church was flanked by a convent that housed the monks of the Dominican order, confiscated by the Italian state with the advent of the unification of Italy and used as a barracks for the carabinieri. The church of San Domenico has returned to its former glory with the last restorations in 1999 which allowed it to reopen for worship after the closure determined by the earthquake of November 1980.
