Church of Saint Alphius

Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria la Cava and Sant 'Alfio, it was built in the current structure between 1700 and 1750. It was built on the small Church of S. Alfio, built after the catastrophic earthquake of 1693, on the ruins of the previous basilica dedicated to S. Alfio. It has a basilical structure, with three naves, according to the traditional scheme of the Memory or Funerary Basilicas built, since the early Christian era, on the tombs of the martyrs. The works for the construction of the current Cathedral committed the resources of the city for almost fifty years. It was not completely finished according to the original plan, and to this day several parts without pictorial decoration are visible. It is preceded by a Sagrato of white and black pebbles with geometric patterns. The façade of clear Baroque style has three orders, the last one being the bell tower, in which, in the central niche, the bell tower stands out, cast in 1595 ad honorem Dei sanctorum fratrum martirum Alphii Philadelphi et Cirini. Of particular interest is the central wooden door. Inside the richly decorated Church is divided into three naves by two rows of six columns per side (symbolic number indicating the 12 Apostles). An inscription is placed on the triumphal arch in which it is declared that the Church of Lentini recognized Mary, Mother of God, before the Council of Ephesus. The frescoes in the central vault and the transept of the 17th century, the paintings of the side altars and the presbytery compartment (high altar), from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries depict the many martyrs of the church of Lentini (side altars), stories of miracles, the path of the Church lentinese. In the apse of the high altar is a pipe organ from the second half of the 18th century. In the altar of the Sacrament there is a Byzantine icon, depicting the Madonna Odigitria.

Baroque church, richly decorated and with artifacts dating back to other eras, dedicated to the cult of the patron saints of the town. Interesting are the "Putridaria" placed near the churchyard, under the walkable surface.
