Historical News XV (whole building well) The construction of the church around the 15th century. According to the handwritten chronicle of Galas, Francesco Sforza in 1426 would have destroyed Taverna. The original architectural imprint was compromised both by the earthquake of 1783 and by the flood of 1954 and finally, by the restoration completed in 1958. Description According to the information in our possession, the church was built in the 15th century. The original architecture and interior furnishings were completely erased by the earthquake of 1783 and the flood of 1954 with the consequent restoration of 1958. The facade which is divided into two orders has a portal with a round arch preceded by a staircase placed between two pilasters. At the top in the center, inside a niche there is the statue of the Virgin with child, framed on both sides by a single lancet window with polychrome glass, a medallion with Marian symbols is carved in the tympanum. Attached to the church is the oratory of the Madonna del Carmelo with an eighteenth-century wooden ceiling and stucco decorations on the walls. Inside, on the left wall of the nave, in place of the altars, there are various statues of saints in niches. On the right, the nave opens onto the chapel of Santa Cecilia, in the center of which there is a seventeenth-century wooden altar with the altarpiece of the Madonna in glory attributed to Azzolino. On the right wall there is a wooden crucifix from the first half of the 17th century attributed to Balducci. A triumphal arch separates the nave from the presbytery. On the main altar there is a wooden pediment of the first half of the seventeenth century, on whose cymatium there is the coat of arms of Santa Maria Maggiore which frames a canvas by Balducci depicting the Madonna del Carmelo and Saints.
