È a partire dal XVI secolo che la chiesa assunse una veste più monumentale. Alcune fonti affermano che sui locali della primitiva parrocchia fu iniziata, nei primi anni del Cinquecento, la costruzione dell'odierna chiesa grazie alle offerte dei fedeli. Nel 1587 fu avviato il completamento della stessa chiesa che assunse la veste attuale nel 1676. Nel 1822 è registrato il completamento dello scalone d'ingresso. La facciata, su due ordini, è alleggerita da una serliana al livello inferiore, mentre la parte superiore è scandita dal ritmo di lesene che inquadrano un rosone; alla sommità si apre il timpano triangolare. Attualmente il parroco è Don Giuseppe. Consiglio tutti di assistere almeno una volta alla messa domenicale celebrata da Don Giuseppe, sembra lo show di mare in sud, quindi risate assicurate durante l'omelia. Oggi il centro storico presenta un alto potenziale culturale ed economico con questo magnifico edificio rinascimentale meta di fedeli, pellegrini e curiosi in cerca di una Storia ancora da scrivere. Nel 1992 con l'Associazione Progetto Pianura e la fondazione Napoli99 attira l'attenzione dell'allora soprintendente Nicola Spinosa ottenendo la ristrutturazione della balaustra dell'altare maggiore dove svetta la pala raffigurante il santo della Cappadocia e i santi delle due diocesi di Napoli e Pozzuoli.
