La chiesa di Maria SS. dell’Assunta è situata all’inizio del centro storico di Rende, quasi a voler accogliere tutti coloro che si recano verso l’antico borgo. La chiesuola di Santa Maria Assunta, che fu più volte rasa al suolo dai terremoti nel corso dei secoli, prima di essere iscritta sotto l’attuale titolo era intestata alla Madonna di Loreto, denominazione corrotta dal popolo in “Madonna d’u Ritu”, e così era invocata segnatamente dalle giovanette desiderose di trovar marito. Queste ultime rivolgevano alla Madre di Dio una preghiera vagamente simile a quella che i Greci e i Latini di un tempo solevano indirizzare a Venere, e assimilata forse da altre culture, questa: “Madonna mia d’u Ritu,l fammi trovari ‘nu bieddru maritu;/ fammillu trovar i jancu e russu,l jancu e russu e coloritu”. L’attività religiosa si sussegue per tutto l’anno,con particolare intensità nel periodo 6-15 agosto (Novena e Solennità dell’assunzione di Maria SS. al cielo), a Natale con l’allestimento del tradizionale presepe), nella settimana Santa (preparazione dei Sepolcri) e a maggio(mese dedicato alla Madonna) con la recita del S.Rosario tutte le sere. L’edificio di piccole dimensioni,sorge poco distante dalla vecchia chiesa più volte ricostruita e che venne distrutta da un movimento franoso. Della vecchia cappella sono rimaste due colonne,che ancor oggi sono i pilastri della nuova,ed un basso rilievo marmoreo che rappresenta il miracolo di San Giacomo in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Di notevole fattura anche un quadro a tempera di Donato Magli raffigurante Santa Maria Assunta in cielo. Durante i festeggiamenti di ferragosto ancora oggi si effettuano antichi giochi,come la corsa dei sacchi,la rottura delle pignatte attaccate ad una corda sospesa in aria e molti altri. Prima dell’attuale denominazione la chiesa era dedicata alla Madonna di Loreto.

The church of Maria SS. dell’Assunta is located at the beginning of the historic center of Rende, almost as if to welcome all those who go to the ancient village. The church of Santa Maria Assunta, which was repeatedly razed to the ground by earthquakes in over the centuries, before being registered under the current title it was made out to the Madonna of Loreto, a denomination corrupted by the people in "Madonna d’u Ritu", and so it was invoked especially by the young girls wishing to find a husband. These last they addressed to the Mother of God a prayer vaguely similar to that which the Greeks and the Latins of the past used to refer to Venus, and perhaps assimilated by other cultures, this: "Madonna mia d’u Ritu, let me find 'nu bieddru maritu; / fammillu find the jancu and russu, l jancu and russu and coloritu ". Religious activity continues throughout the year, with particular intensity in the period 6-15 August (Novena and Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary to heaven), at Christmas with the setting up of the traditional nativity scene), in Holy week (preparation of the Sepulchres) and in May (month dedicated to the Madonna) with the recitation of the Holy Rosary every evening. The small building stands not far from the old church which has been rebuilt several times and which was destroyed by a landslide. Two columns remain of the old chapel, which are still the pillars of the new one today, and a low marble relief representing the miracle of St. James in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Also noteworthy is a tempera painting by Donato Magli depicting Santa Maria Assunta in heaven. During the mid-August celebrations, ancient games are still held today, such as the sack race, the breaking of pots attached to a rope suspended in the air and many others. Before its current name, the church was dedicated to the Madonna of Loreto.
