La chiesa di S. Teresa viene soprattutto ricordata perché eletta dal grande maestro del Verismo Giovanni Verga come teatro della "Cavalleria Rusticana". Per tale motivo oggi è meta di turismo. Anticamente era dedicata alle anime SS. del Purgatorio (da cui prende ancora oggi nome la zona), indi divenne, per il periodo in cui vi celebrarono messa i PP. Gesuiti (1635), Maria SS. della Consolazione. Successivamente per volere delle monache benedettine venne dedicata a Santa Teresa d’Avila. La storia di questa chiesa è collegata a quella dell’adiacente monastero dell’ordine Carmelitano Scalzo. Infatti nel 1645 fu adibita a Conservatorio delle Vergini e nel 1705 divenne monastero regolare dell'ordine. Il convento ha subito le sorti di molti conventi Gesuitici siciliani: trasformato in scuola prima ed in ospedale poi, con la distruzione totale della chiesa in anni che vanno dalla fine dell' ‘800 agli inizi del ‘900, malgrado questa fosse inserita (come da documentazione esistente presso l'archivio storico comunale) in un elenco di beni monumentali da salvaguardare. All’interno della chiesa vi sono pregiati dipinti di fine ‘600, uno dedicato alla Vergine Maria con i Santi e un secondo è il Crocifisso. Vi è anche una statua settecentesca di Santa Teresa d’Avila.

The church of S. Teresa is mainly remembered because it was elected by the great master of Verismo Giovanni Verga as theater of the "Cavalleria Rusticana". For this reason, today is a tourist destination. In ancient times it was dedicated to SS souls. del Purgatorio (from which the area still takes its name), then became, for the period in which the Mass was celebrated. Jesuits (1635), Maria SS. of Consolation. Subsequently, at the behest of the Benedictine nuns, it was dedicated to Saint Teresa of Avila. The history of this church is connected to that of the adjacent monastery of the Carmelite order Scalzo. In fact in 1645 it was used as a Conservatory of the Virgins and in 1705 it became a regular monastery of the order. The convent suffered the fate of many Sicilian Jesuit convents: transformed into a school first and then into a hospital, with the total destruction of the church in years ranging from the end of the 1800s to the beginning of the 1900s, although this was inserted (as from existing documentation in the municipal historical archive) in a list of monumental assets to be safeguarded. Inside the church there are valuable paintings from the late 600s, one dedicated to the Virgin Mary with the Saints and a second is the Crucifix. There is also an eighteenth century statue of St. Teresa of Avila.
