La venerazione risale ai coloni che giunsero a Santa Marina Salina e Lingua tra il XII e XIII secolo.
Gli abitanti di Santa Marina si posero sotto la tutela di questa figura, il cui culto venne portato in Italia e in Sicilia dai veneziani. Coloni che portarono dalla penisola greca di Monembasia, ritenuta la cantina del Mediterraneo, il vitigno che poi diede origine alla famosa Malvasia di Salina.
Verosimilmente fu edificata in precedenza una cappella nell'entroterra, l'attuale chiesa fu costruita nel 1622, per poi essere ingrandita nel 1725.
