Santa Maria di Gesù inferiore era infatti una chiesa di origine quattrocentesca, ma rifatta nel 600, distrutta dal terremoto del 1908 che stava nella zona nord di Messina. La chiesa attuale, insieme al convento annesso dei Frati Minimi francescani, ha rappresentato uno dei punti di riferimento nella nascita, intorno agli anni Venti del Novecento, del quartiere "nuovo" di Provinciale. Caratterizzata dal rientro della facciata rispetto al fronte stradale, dalla grande scalinata a tutta lunghezza e dall'ampio portico, è anche uno snodo visuale e urbanistico della zona. Ad ampia aula unica con decorazioni applicate sugli intonaci, possiede una bella statua della Madonna con bambino del Gagini, proveniente dall'antica chiesa. The church has a historical naming. Tutto comunica una piacevole emozione e il delicato sottofondo musicale favorisce la preghiera davanti al tabernacolo, cuore dell'intera struttura, sovrastato dalla statua di Gesù a grandezza naturale. Il recente restyle della zona absidale, dell'altare centrale e dell'ampia sacrestia ha ridato luce e vita a tutto il transetto. L'unica navata è abbastanza grande, ma sempre brulicante di vita, di iniziative, di servizi com'è, sembra enorme ed accogliente. It is my church and also "home".
