I lavori iniziarono nell'anno di canonizzazione di Sant'Alfonso dei Liguori e furono ultimati nel 1855. E' il luogo dove Luigi Pirandello, nato ad Agrigento il 28 giugno 1867, Premio Nobel della letteratura del 1934, sposò Antonietta Portulano nel 1894. Presenta un'interno sontuoso in stile neoclassico a tre navate che non é percepibile dai passanti, dato che é priva di un corpo e da una facciata autonoma. E' infatti inglobata, come una cappella, all'interno dell'ex Casa/Collegio dei Redentoristi, chiusa nel 2019. Quando la Cattedrale é chiusa, é sede dei tradizionali riti della Settimana Santa. The first church in the world to be dedicated to Sant'Alfonso. The works began in the year of canonization of Sant'Alfonso dei Liguori and were completed in 1855. It is the place where Luigi Pirandello, born in Agrigento on June 28, 1867, Nobel Prize for literature in 1934, married Antonietta Portulano in 1894. Presents a sumptuous neoclassical interior with three naves that is not perceptible to passers-by, as it is devoid of a body and an autonomous facade. It is in fact incorporated, like a chapel, inside the former House / College of the Redemptorists, closed in 2019. When the Cathedral is closed, it is the seat of the traditional rites of Holy Week.
