c	ciccio piazza on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Non sappiamo con esattezza l’anno in cui sono iniziati i lavori di costruzione della chiesa, ma dalle iscrizioni sulle campane della torre “Santo Rigatuso rettore, anno del signore 1817, per mandato di Don Luigi Salomone fondatore di detta chiesa delle Anime purganti” , si deduce che risalga a tale periodo. Dalle notizie forniteci dal Parroco Dr. Giacomo Magno sappiamo che è stata visitata nel 1820 da Monsignor Aprile e che vi esisteva una confraternita dedicata a San Gregorio Taumaturgo. Vi era allora una sola cappella simile ad un magazzino e il Vescovo vi ordinò la costruzione di un grande tavolato, di cui oggi non rimane alcuna traccia. Essa non viene invece ricordata nelle visite del 1846 e 1854 compiute da Mons.. Sajeva forse perché era in corso di ristrutturazione. Grandi lavori di restauro vennero compiuti dal canonico Cristofero Virgone con le offerte dei fedeli. Nel 1895 venne ceduta la chiesa da Cristofero Viavattene una casa confinante per l’utilità della stessa e nel 1896 venne costruita l’attuale sacrestia in uno spazio donato da Francesco Virgone. Fra Luigi Viavattene abitò nella casetta attigua alla chiesa e a sue spese ordinò al Vaccaro il quadro delle Anime Purganti che sta sopra l’altare maggiore. We do not know exactly the year in which the construction of the church began, but from the inscriptions on the bells of the tower “Santo Rigatuso rector, year of the lord 1817, by order of Don Luigi Salomone founder of said church of the purgative Souls”, it can be deduced that it dates back to this period. From the information provided by the parish priest Dr. Giacomo Magno we know that it was visited in 1820 by Monsignor Aprile and that there was a brotherhood dedicated to San Gregorio Taumaturgo. There was then only one chapel similar to a warehouse and the Bishop ordered the construction of a large planking, of which today no trace remains. It is not mentioned in the visits of 1846 and 1854 made by Mons. Sajeva, perhaps because it was being restructured. Major restoration works were carried out by the canonical Cristofero Virgone with the offerings of the faithful. In 1895 the church was sold by Cristofero Viavattene, a house bordering on its usefulness and in 1896 the current sacristy was built in a space donated by Francesco Virgone. Friar Luigi Viavattene lived in the small house adjacent to the church and at his own expense he ordered the Vaccaro the picture of the Purgative Souls above the high altar.
