Questa è una cittadina molto particolare per la storia del periodo dell'invasione turca di Otranto e di tutta la zona. Entrando nel centro storico si slancia il Castello di Palmariggi, struttura di cui restano solo due torri ben conservate, ricordo dei tragici momenti di quei tempi. Le due torri o bastioni a base circolare sono unite da un muro di Cortina che nei castelli medievali, circondava e proteggeva la corte interna. Tutt'intorno un tempo vi era un fossato ora colmato da un bel prato al livello stradale. Va ricordato che questo, come altri castelli vicini, costituivano la cinta esterna di difesa della città di Otranto capoluogo della "Terra d'Otranto. Nella sua storia fu più volte assalito, smantellato, distrutto e quindi riedificato. Gli aragonesi lo ricostruirono dopo la guerra del 1480 contro i turchi invasori ed assunse la forma odierna. La fortezza era a pianta quadrata con quattro torri agli angoli ed un ponte levatoio a est distrutto negli anni '50. Comunque, chi vuole vederlo in modo particolare, si rechi lì verso l' imbrunire, quando il gioco di luci è le ombre della sera, sembrano richiamare rumori di spade ed urla di guerra di un passato cristallizzato nelle mura di questo castello come di tutto questo territorio.
