La costruzione della fortificazione esterna risale al 1479 quando la Repubblica di Venezia intese porre un blocco alle incursioni turche. La costruzione del Castello invece avvenne successivamente, dopo il 1511, anno in cui Gradisca fu conquistata dall'impero Austriaco. Basta camminare per le strade della città per trovare moltissime tracce della storia di questa bellissima città. Unico neo: la mancanza di una segnaletica turistica adeguata all'importanza di questo luogo. Vale la pena di una piccola visita.
