★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Il nemico aveva fortemente reagito il giorno innanzi per prepararsi la fuga notturna. Infatti al mattino il battaglione in capo alle brigate prese la rincorsa verso il Livenza. Gli Arditi avevano le ali ai piedi. Arrivai con una pattuglia di punta nel paese di Cavalier; la popolazione ci corse incontro piu' con le lacrime che con le parole le infinite sofferenze. Nel fondo del tascapane ritrovai qualche pezzo di cioccolata per bambini, qualche mezzo toscano per gli uomini. Un ardito innalzo' il tricolore sul campanile di dove tutto il giorno avanti avevan cantato le mitragliatrici austriache. The enemy had strongly reacted the day before to prepare for the night escape. In fact, in the morning the battalion at the head of the brigades took a run towards the Livenza. The Arditi had wings on their feet. I arrived with a peak patrol in the village of Cavalier; the population ran to meet us more with tears than with words, infinite suffering. In the bottom of the tascapane I found a few pieces of chocolate for children, some Tuscan means for men. A daring raised the flag on the bell tower where the Austrian machine guns had sung all day ahead.
