La barriera, progettata dall'architetto Angelo Angelucci da Todi, è stata intitolata a Nino Bixio nel 1882. Nel 1997 il nome del piazzale, e quindi della barriera annessa, venne cambiato e intitolato a Tommaso Barbieri. La zona continua comunque ad essere indicata nel parlare comune come Barriera Bixio.
Barriera Bixio was built to celebrate the annexation of Parma to the nascent Kingdom of Italy. The barrier, designed by the architect Angelo Angelucci da Todi, was named after Nino Bixio in 1882. In 1997 the name of the square, and therefore of the adjoining barrier, was changed and named after Tommaso Barbieri. However, the area continues to be referred to as the Bixio barrier.
