Era conosciuto al tempo del fascismo come Campo della GIL (gioventù italiana del littorio), poiché appositamente costruito per gli scopi del regime, insieme all'edifico che ha poi ospitato il Provveditorato Scolastico Provinciale (e attualmente il Dipartimento Regionale della Protezione Civile). In seguito definito ex Gil, da diversi anni è intitolato alla memoria di un giovane atleta messinese. Le tribune sono state ristrutturate nei primi anni Novanta del Novecento, Recentemente è stata ripristinata la pista. Invece le parti a prato non sono molto curate e si presentano con molti vuoti nell'erba. Sicuramente è un buon campo d'allenamento, ma non è omologato per gare ufficiali.
