Aggregation and human agglomeration of a confessional nature that has suffered from the widespread crisis of religious vocations following which the overall level and quality of the local clergy has progressively lowered to lead to full-blown episodes of inadequacy or worse to the limit of decency and which have seriously prejudiced the decorum of the institution itself

Early February is the festival of St Agata the patron saint of Catania. For 1700 years the people of Catania assemble to thank her for salvation from earthquakes, plague, the fires of Etna… to respect her suffering , demonstrate their devotion and affectionally take her for a walk around their city. It is impossible to differentiate between truth and legend, St Agata it seems over her deceased life was buried in almost half the churches of Catania. And in life, mistreated at every other one… Although her body was taken to Constantinople, after 80 odd years she returned. For a few days before St Agata, there are canelora carried around the city with bands playing, there is such enthusiasm that the children make replicas of the candelora… then carry them around the streets….to the beat of the music… After several visits to Catania, you notice the beauty of the duomo and the monuments around the piazza, which have recently been cleaned for the festival. The other positive is that some of the churches which open infrequently during the year are now open for these few days ….…. The church of the crucifix of miracles, inside you will find a painting by Giovanni Lanfranco painted in 1613, is a treasure … another little church in the Piazza Carlo Alberto, which was in the time of St Agata an under ground grotto then in the 9 century a little church was built over the top of it, to protect it. To a preamble also there was a costumes display and they were absolutely amazing, more amazing were the faces of the participant, there is no Sicilian face……they could have come from any country within 4000 kilometres of Sicily… as they all skin shades, all hues of hair and eye colour. Around the city there is sand deposited at sites where some event happened to St Agata… and many devotees… instead of walking….hold vigils, with candles…. The procession operates on Sicilian time….this has nothing to do with a time schedule don't bother to go to some phone APP or authority to find her.. simply go to a devotee, who will be dressed in a white smock, with a braided cord around the waist, white gloves and the cutest little black hat and simply ask’ where is St Agata?’ …they will tell you precisely where she is , what she has done and about to do. Like an old friend St Agata stops where she likes, for as long as she likes, despite her age she is not fragile …wishing to walk all through the night….helped along by a 300 metre length of rope… pulled by the devotees, for her difficult ascents of hills. Her desire is to share this beautiful city with all who will make the effort to walk with her…At this point its was no longer a religious festival ….. for me…. It is sharing your time… and immediately reminded of the walks have taken with friends who now have eternal peace…. No important event in Sicily can be celebrated without food, this is the time to eat sweets, there is even a sweet in the shape of the breast of St Agata, topped with a red cherry …By the amount of sweets for sale, each of the estimated 1,000,000 people who visit must eat about 10 kgs of sweets. Candles are also for sale which vary in size from hand held to needing an ape, …. A small 3 wheeled motor vehicle, so common in southern Italy. Also the white flower of St Agata are sold by the thousands. Another favourite is bread rolls with horse meat….It is said of Sicilians, they build houses like they will live forever and eat as if they are going to die tomorrow….. Today walked the street which St Agata accompanied me yesterday and there is a sadness… but you see the city with new vision….and this is the true reward of attending the festival of St Agata…
