Well preserved city destroyed in 79 AD. You can explore the whole city in 3-4 hours. You can see everything from public path to gymnasium, bakery, beautiful houses with corridors and temples. And even a 2000 years old cloth ironing machine used by them. I used the pdf version to explore the city, everything was well marked, descriptive and easy to understand. Although an audio guide is preferred. Worth the visit!

If you don't have much time to visit fi Pompeii but still want to see impressive ancient Roman houses from the same petiod, visit Hercalaneum. It's do able in about four hours. The place has been restored here and there and it gives you a very good idea how it must have been in those days. It's a short walk from the station to the exhibition and trains are very cheap in Italy.

Very cool and exciting experience to discover the lost city of Herculaneum. Surprisingly well preserved. Our tour guide was awesome explaining the daily life of Romans and their behaviors and mannerisms. It rained a bit when we went but ended with a beautiful rainbow! The shop on site was actually pretty nice and we ended up buying a bronze ring. (Yeah it was overpriced but the experience was priceless!)

A really great site, you can really imagine what it was like in its heyday. The queue for tickets took a while so I would suggest booking online in advance. The mini guidebook provided was great and allowed us to self-guide with ease.

Wow. Definitely worth a visit. We went in December so it wasn't busy at all. You can guide yourself round the site, but if you do fancy a bit extra you can purchase an audio guide or even hire a local guide of the site. The ticket price was very reasonable and you walk on mosaics and floors that are thousands of years old - surreal. It's really well preserved and we spent about 3-4 hours here at a slow pace exploring each building

Amazing ruins!! There is an online guide that explains the background to the marked ruins and takes you round in order. The highlight for me were the mosaics in the baths. Tickets were €26 for a group of two which can be bought from the ticket office near the entrance. There is also parking nearby. Definitely worth a visit!

We visited Herculaneum the day after we had a fantastic guided tour of Pompeii. We had learned so much during that tour that we felt it was unnecessary to do another guided tour. Therefore , we did Herculaneum in our own pace and we had an amazing day in this once so fabulous holiday resort by the sea. The buildings are better preserved than in Pompeii and you find lots of places with 2000 year old wooden planks. We spent about 3 hours wandering around the ancient city. It is much smaller than Pompeii, but there is so much amazing to see.

The most spectacular day out in history. Visit before a visit to Pompeii to get a sense of a more compact life. The site is amazing, so much to see, so many highlights and so much complete. We turned up and got tickets on the door, I would advice going early for this. The surrounding area is also amazing to give you a sense of everyday italian life. The bakery up the road is unreal.
