Anzio BeachHead Museum

It's a small but very good organized museum, that you can find in the center of the city of Anzio. The museum is located inside and amazing old house surrounded with a garden. Really nice?

I visited the museum in September of 2011. The weather and location were just beautiful. The grounds were very well kept. The kind, humourous Italian man working at the museum does so on a volunteer basis, and has for many years because as a young lad, he actually helped American soldiers during WWII. It's a very small space, but contains quality material and artifacts. Plan for a half-day visit to the museum itself, and another hour or two for the surrounding area, pier, and lunch. Well worth the effort.

Really nice museum with english speaking staff. Museum is small but includes lot to see from WWII battle of Anzio and also from Roman times. Free entry but you can donate to coin box if feel so. Highly recommended if you within the area and like (war)history.

Great little museum that needs more support. Really informative, good guides, interesting exhibits of Operation Shingle and the subsequent battle that involved some of the most savage fighting of WWII.

Free admission. Donations are accepted. Good educational museum about the landings.

Small museum but packed with war paraphernalia. Saw a 20 minute war personal documentary from a British soldier. It was show on a projector and had troublesome audio. Some ruins around because many Italian towns were destroyed during the war.

Amazing museum!! Wonderful staff too. I emailed them in advance of my visit since they are usually closed on Wednesday and they opened the museum so that I was able to visit. Incredible collection of wwii items in this small museum. It's easy to visit by train from Rome and just a short walk from the museum to Anzio beach.

Well-intentioned museum that doesn’t meet the mark except for diehards. That said, hopefully tourists, especially Americans, will make a brief stop by cultural obligation. There’s no story here, no narrative, no big text explaining exhibits and how they connect. What was the Anzio landing about? You’d be hard-pressed to learn the answer here, unfortunately. If you already know, you have historical scaffolding around which to wrap these artifacts. If you didn’t walk in knowing, it’s just a bunch of stuff with little to no context. Artifacts are mostly without captions; where there are captions, they’re only in Italian. Presentations appear not to have been updated in many years. That doesn’t necessarily make them poor exhibits, but here given the lack of curation, it suggests there’s been little effort toward improvement in a long time. Volunteer, shoestring operations try really hard. I'm certain the people who run this museum do their best. I’m surprised and saddened Italy can’t seem to get a museum together to properly tell this story, in whole or at least a microcosm. I’d hoped Anzio might be more than “here’s a bunch of stuff.” It wasn’t. The good news is museum has a core collection of artifacts, and that’s the hard part. If they offer a multilingual narrative & captions, that’d go a long way toward making this museum accessible to mainstream visitors. The big United States flag is hung backward. Hopefully it will be get adjusted properly. VISITED: 31 October 2021; no entry charge; donations accepted.
