★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La Via Latina era una strada romana, che da Roma andava in direzione sud est per 240 km, e terminava a Benevento. A differenza della maggior parte delle strade romane, non porta il nome del costruttore, suggerendo così che si tratti di una delle strade più antiche. Tale percorso, pur se tracciato definitivamente tra il IV e il III secolo a.C., veniva già utilizzato in età preistorica e gli Etruschi lo usarono per colonizzare la Campania tra i secoli VIII e VI a.C E’ possibile ammirare tutt’ora all’interno del parco una porzione dell’antico tracciato e considerevoli resti sono visibili subito fuori Roma. Lungo la via sono presenti resti di tombe, ville romane, torri e casali medievali. Larga circa 4 m e lastricata in tutto il percorso con massi poligonali in selce (basoli). A seguito dei lavori di sistemazioni è stato rinvenuto nel letto del fosso dell’ acqua mariana un tratto di questa pavimentazione. Per chi è interessato e vuole vedere un altro tratto della via Latina si può recare all'area archeologica sita dietro l'arco di Travertino sulla via appia nuova ( in allegato le foto ).
The Via Latina was a Roman road, which from Rome went south-east for 240 km, and ended in Benevento. Unlike most Roman roads, it does not bear the name of the builder, thus suggesting that it is one of the oldest streets. This route, although definitively traced between the fourth and third centuries BC, was already used in prehistoric times and the Etruscans used it to colonize Campania between the eighth and sixth centuries BC. It is still possible to admire inside the park. a portion of the ancient route and considerable remains are visible just outside Rome. Along the way there are remains of tombs, Roman villas, towers and medieval farmhouses. About 4 m wide and paved throughout the route with polygonal flint boulders (flagstones). Following the refurbishment works, a section of this pavement was found in the bed of the Marian water ditch. For those who are interested and want to see another stretch of the Via Latina, you can go to the archaeological area located behind the Travertine Arch on the Via Appia Nuova (photos are attached).
