Fu dedicato alla Madonna Assunta.Nel 500 dopo la parentesi degli Abati Commendatori che causarono la partenza dei Benedettini, subentrarono i monaci Olivetani provenienti dal santuario di Monte Oliveto Maggiore. Con la dipartita dei Benedettini voluta perché questi stavano diventando economicamente troppo potenti, inizia un periodo sconvolto da un epidemia che durò moltissimo tempo e la popolazione dette la colpa proprio all'allontanamento dei Benedettini. Molte persone malate furono gettate nella cripta della chiesa,gli adulti sul lato sinistro i bambini sul lato destro. Questo per contenere l'epidemia.... La chiesa in stile romanico a forma a Tau,Croce Latina senza il capo,con le absidi rivolte ad Oriente a rappresentare il sole, luce, il Redentore. Purtroppo nel corso dei secoli è stata mutilata di alcune parti importanti ed ha cambiato fisionomia rispetto alla struttura originaria. Fu restaurata nel 1940. Il titolo Abbazia(tolto in precedenza),fu restituito il 30 gennaio 1974. È ad una sola navata,con ampio presbiterio rialzato impostato nella cripta. L'illuminazione è garantita da finestre monofore. Qui vennero per venerare l'immagine della Vergine Assunta,(patrona di Farneta),l'imperatore Carlo V, e Papa Clemente VII,con 10 cardinali.
