. . . Part of the municipal territory of Carpaneto Piacentino is included in the Geological Reserve of the Piacenziano, which contains a conspicuous patrimony of fossil remains of the Pliocene. The toponym "Carpaneto", hornbeam forest, derives from the hornbeam, a typical tree of the territory as evidenced by the suffix eto particularly widespread in toponyms deriving from phytonyms, cf. Saliceto, Noceto, Olmeto. The popular etymology has linked the name to the presence of carp in the local streams, or in a more imaginative variant it derives from the phrase "dear paneto" or place where the bread has a high price, which legend has it was pronounced by a Roman legionary sent from a camp near the village to take supplies.
