Complesso di chiese molto suggestive. Patrimonio dell arte e architettura bolognese molto importante. La loro storia ha origine da un antico tempio dedicato ad iside, se non addirittura a culti druidici.
Complex of very suggestive churches. Very important art heritage and Bolognese architecture. Their history originates from an ancient temple dedicated to isis, or even druidic cults.

The part of the Santo Stefano complex that we liked the most, also for the free explanations of an elderly gentleman (professor?) Who told us all the history and transformation, from temple of Isis to Christian church. To see with a minimum of preparation, to fully enjoy its history

The Basilica del Sepolcro - the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is a copy of its namesake in Jerusalem. Erected on an octagonal foundation, it is crowned by a twelve-sided dome. In the middle there is a grave in which the bones of St. Petronius lay from 1141 to 2000, but which were then transferred to the Basilica of St. Petronius. There is also a spring that symbolizes the water of the Jordan. One of the 12 pillars is made of black marble and is reminiscent of the flogging of Jesus.

This ancient church is an amazing piece of history. There are several buildings to visit, and each gives a different perspective on what was the Christian faith in the early days. The entrance is free as long as you are respectful. You can also buy memory coins.

In this place between the first and second centuries. A.D. a Roman matron of Bononia dedicated a temple to Isis, next to her domus (the remains of the floors are located in the nearby church of Saints Vitale and Agricola), near Via Emilia and outside the city walls, whose remains are visible in the base of the Garisenda tower. Between 431 and 450 the bishop, future saint, Petronius decided to transform this pagan temple into a church and given its already dodecagonal shape, he dedicated it to the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem (from the Constantinian era). Since the cult of Isis provided for a sacred source, this, now dry, was reconsecrated as water from the Jordan and the circular colonnade around it, in the open air, is closed with a wall and surmounted with a dome. The original columns, now seven in all, are in black cipollino (of African origin), while the brick ones were added in the early 11th century by the Benedictine monks, after it was heavily damaged during the devastating Hungarian invasions of the 10th century. The twelve columns symbolize the apostles, while the black cipolline marble column, offset from the others, symbolizes the one where Christ was scourged and, as we read in a cartouche, guaranteed 200 years of indulgence to everyone each time you visited this place. The whole complex has a precise symbolism and tomorrow we will discover it together. A final curiosity: the vault and walls of the church, now bare, originally had frescoes with biblical scenes created by Marco Berlinghieri (son of the most famous Berlinghiero Berlinghieri) in the mid-thirteenth century, almost entirely erased in 1804 to be replaced from new Baroque-style frescoes executed by Filippo Pedrini, which in turn were eliminated from subsequent restorations of the late nineteenth century. The building, with a central plan, is built on an irregular octagonal base perimeter in the center of which stands a dodecagonal dome; in total we can see 12 of marble and brick, which surround the large aedicule in the form of a monumental “Sepulcher”, which housed the relics of San Petronio, found here in 1141. The Sepulcher door is opened one week a year, after the celebration of Easter midnight mass, in the presence of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher and can be visited. Today the body of San Petronio is no longer found in this church, since in the year 2000 Cardinal Giacomo Biffi had the remains moved to the basilica of San Petronio, which already housed the head of the city’s patron.
