★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Tra le vie Appia Nuova e Tuscolana nei pressi dei moderni quartieri di Cinecittà, Appio Claudio, Quadraro e Quarto Miglio, si stagliano nella campagna le poderose strutture degli acquedotti romani Aqua Marcia, Claudia e Anio Novus.
L’Aqua Marcia, costruita tra il 144 e il 140 a.C. dal pretore Quinto Marcio Re, è il più lungo acquedotto di Roma. Tra II e del I sec. a.C. ad esso vennero sovrapposti i condotti di altri due acquedotti: l’Aqua Tepula e l’Aqua Iulia.
L’Aqua Marcia attingeva dalle sorgenti dell’Aniene nei pressi di Arsoli e Agosta per proseguire lungo un percorso di ben 91 km, in parte sotterraneo in parte sopraelevato su arcate. Passando nei pressi di Vicovaro, Tivoli e Gallicano nel Lazio, arrivava alla Via Prenestina, e da qui proseguiva per Capannelle, fino ad arrivare a Porta Maggiore e terminare a Porta Collina, fornendo acqua al Campidoglio, al Celio e all’Aventino. Plinio il Vecchio la definì “clarissima aquarum onmnium”, la più pura di tutte le acque. Proprio per l’ottima qualità nel 1870 si decise di ripristinare l’acquedotto che è tuttora funzionante. Resti dell’Aqua Marcia, Tepula e Iulia sono visibili nel Parco degli Acquedotti, vicino il Casale di Roma Vecchia
Between the Appia Nuova and Tuscolana streets near the modern districts of Cinecittà, Appio Claudio, Quadraro and Quarto Miglio, the mighty structures of the Roman aqueducts Aqua Marcia, Claudia and Anio Novus stand out in the countryside.
The Aqua Marcia, built between 144 and 140 BC by the praetor Quinto Marcio Re, it is the longest aqueduct in Rome. Between II and I century. B.C. the conduits of two other aqueducts were superimposed on it: the Aqua Tepula and the Aqua Iulia.
The Aqua Marcia drew from the sources of the Aniene near Arsoli and Agosta to continue along a path of 91 km, partly underground and partly raised on arches. Passing near Vicovaro, Tivoli and Gallicano in Lazio, it arrived at Via Prenestina, and from here it continued to Capannelle, until arriving at Porta Maggiore and ending at Porta Collina, supplying water to the Campidoglio, the Celio and the Aventine. Pliny the Elder called it "clarissima aquarum onmnium", the purest of all waters. Due to its excellent quality, in 1870 it was decided to restore the aqueduct which is still functional today.
